Old police headquarters is arresting new development

The long closed San Diego Police headquarters on West Harbor Drive had a festive reawakening Sunday evening with a private celebration of its new customer-friendly role.

Terramar Retail Centers has turned it into a place for shoppers instead of shoplifters, for cocktail conversations, not murder interrogations and fine art displays rather than mug shots.

Vacated in 1987 and declared historic in 1998, the police compound has been fully remodeled. It opened to the public Monday as The Headquarters at Seaport District with boutiques, eateries and gift shops.
