After years of delay, The Headquarters opens on the downtown waterfront

It sat empty for years, but the renovated San Diego Police Headquarters building, called simply "The Headquarters" is now open for business.

It took years of planning, getting permits and renovation work to bring the project to reality. The renovation work began last year and as of Monday, crews were still putting on the finishing touches here and there.

"It's been a long time in the making and I'm glad that it's finally coming to fruition," said Jennifer Gordon with Terramar Retail Centers. That's the Carlsbad based company that developed The Headquarters. The project was supposed to open in 2008, but then the economy tanked. "Nobody was opening any stores or expanding any retail, so we kind of had to change our course a little bit. Then, we started re-leasing it a couple of years after," Gordon said.
